PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composition useful as an adhesive for paper processing, etc., having improved film strength, shelf stability, etc., by subjecting a vinyl acetate monomer, etc. to emulsion polymerization using a specifically treated carboxyl group-containing polymer as a protective colloid. CONSTITUTION:(A) (ii) A basic substance (e.g., caustic soda, etc.) is added to (i) a carboxyl group-containing polymer (e.g., partially imido polymer of isobutylene- maleic anhydride, etc.) so that the polymer is made water-soluble, and it is reacted with (iii) 0.05-50wt% (based on polymer) unsaturated carboxylic acid (e.g., maleic acid, etc.) and (iv) 0.05-50wt% peroxide (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, etc.) to give a reaction product, which is blended with (v) 0.1-100wt% inorganic filler (e.g., calcium carbonate, etc.) to give a protective colloid. (B) Vinyl acetate monomer along or it and versatic acid, etc. are subjected to emulsion polymerization in the presence of the protective colloid to give the desired composition.
