Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield useful as a raw material for high polymer compounds and a raw material for a physiologically active substance, e.g., drugs, by halogenating directly acrylonitrile with a halogenating agent in the presence of a catalytic amount of an alkali metal halide. CONSTITUTION:Acrylonitrile is halogenated in the presence of an alkali metal halide (e.g., LiF, NaF, KF, etc.) in a molar ratio of the alkali halide to acrylonitrile of 0.05-2mol at -70-70 deg.C, preferably at -20-40 deg.C, to give 2, 3-dihalogenopropionitrile. The reaction is required to undergo at least under scattered light (e.g., natural light passed through glass, scattered light of luminescent lamp). A polymerization inhibitor (e.g., hydroquinone, phenyl-beta-naphthylamine, etc.) may be added preferably.
