Summary:PURPOSE:To restore the transmission characteristics of an optical fiber cable degraded by radiation exposure by placing heaters on the cable in its longitudinal direction thereby making it possible to heat the cable to temps. higher than an ordinary temp. CONSTITUTION:A heat-resistant cushion layer 2 and a heat-resistant covering layer 3 are formed on the outside surface of an optical fiber 1. The clad optical fiber 4 is made to a cable of the single fiber alone or plural pieces of fibers are twisted together with a tension member and are made to a cable. Further, heaters such as electric heartes are placed longitudinally on the outside circumference of such optical fiber cable or the cable is contained in a heating structure wherein the heaters are embedded, so that the cable is heated when desired. With such arangement, it is possible to restore the transmission characteristics of the cable by heating the cable when the transmission characteristics are degraded by exposure to radiations.
