Summary:PURPOSE:To compensate missing of a video signal at helical scanning, by compressing a time axis of the video signal in synchronizing a rotary head to a vertical synchronizing signal, and recording a video signal with one field or more on one track. CONSTITUTION:A composite video signal from a terminal 4 is applied to a time axis compression circuit 5 and a rotary head controlling circuit 7. The circuit 7 makes control so as to synchronize a magnetic head 3 on a rotary head drum 2 with a vertical synchronizing signal of the video signal. On the other hand, the video signal is compressed at a time axis compression circuit 5 so as to include a video signal component including the blanking period of the adjacent field at one field period. Thus, since a part of the video signal of the adjacent field is recorded on the recording track in addition to the video signal of one field and the horizontal and vertical synchronizing signals, no missing of video signal is caused.
