Summary:PURPOSE:A microorganism belonging to the genus Corynebacterium, capable of producing the titled compound, is cultured in a medium contaning indole to accumulate the titled compound and the compound is collected readily. CONSTITUTION:A bacterium belonging to the genus Corynebacterium, capable of producing indole-3-glycerol, such as Corynebacterium acetophilum TS-2002 (FERM-5824) is cultured in a medium containing indole to accumulate inodle-3- glycerol, then the compound is collected. This bacterium producing indole-3- glycerol needs tyrosine and/or phenylalanine, when growing and has resistance to triptophane analogs. Indole-3-glycerol has an activity of activating the enzyme synthesizing triptophane and a physiological activity as a member of indole alkaloids, thus being used as medicaments, reagents, industrial chemicals or their intermediate.
