Summary:PURPOSE:To remove a pyrogen (a heat generating substance), by selectively adsorbing the pyrogen on an adsorbent having a specific heterocyclic compound containing nitrogen, e.g. histamine, directly linked directly or through a spacer to a water-insoluble carrier. CONSTITUTION:A solution containing a pyrogen is brought into contact with an adsorbent having a compound of the formula R-A-X (R is heterocyclic ring group, containing nitrogen, and having imidazole skeleton, pyrimidine skeleton, purine skeleton, acridine skeleton, etc.; A is single bond, alkylene or alkenylene; X is a functional group such as H, NH2, COOH or OH; the heterocyclic ring group and the alkylene may have a substituent), particularly histidine, histamine or urocanic acid linked directly or through a spacer to a water-insoluble carrier, preferably cellulose or agarose which may be aminoalkylated or carboxyalkylated to adsorb the pyrogen selectively to the adsorbent and give a solution containing no pyrogen.
