Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the working life of a roll by specifying C, Cr, Nb in alloy steel for the roll. CONSTITUTION:An alloy for rolls consisting, by weight %, of <=0.1 C, 10.0-14.0 Cr, 0.4-1.0 Nb, and the balance substantially iron and unavoidable impurities. Here, Cr is indispensable for improving oxidating resistance and corrosion resistance, and it is required to be above the lower limit because the improvement in elongation and drawing by Nb is effected on the higher side of Cr and in order to provide the effect of improving high temp. toughness by Nb. However, in excess of the upper limit, there is no considerable improvement in properties, and there is possibility of high temp. embrittlement. Ni converts microstructure to the single phase of ferrite including deposited carbide, improves corrosion and oxidation resistances and increases elongation, drawing and high temp. impact values. Even when it is heated at high temp., there is no degradation in strength and it is stable. Below the lower limit, no ferrite structure is formed at all and the elongation and drawing are degraded considerably; in addition, there is possibility of degrading elongation. In excess of the upper limit, embrittleness is liable to occur.
