Summary:PURPOSE:To provide an alloy for occluding hydrogen consisting of a rare earth metal, Ni, Al and a Ti group metal represented by a specified general formula and having considerably improved hysteresis of hydrogen occluding and releasing pressures. CONSTITUTION:This alloy for occluding hydrogen is represented by a general formula RNi5-xAlyMtz (where R is a rare earth metal, Mt is a Ti group metal, 0.01<=x<=2.0, 0.01<=y<=2.0, 0<z<=0.2, 5.0<=5-x+y+z<=5.2, and R may be misch metal). This alloy is obtd. by substituting Mt for part of an alloy represented by a general formula RNi5-alpha Alalpha or by adding Mt to the alloy, and in the presence of Mt the hysteresis of hydrogen occluding and releasing pressures can be reduced considerably. The details are not, however, known. When Mt is substituted, 5-x+y+z=5, and when Mt is added, x=y, y>=z, 0<z<=0.1 and 5.0<5-x+ y+z<=5.2, yet the structure is not known. The case of partial substitution or addition exists furthermore, and the range extends over both the ranges.
