Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject novel compound that displays stabilized chiral smectic C phase in a broad temperature range near the room temperature as well as a large spontaneous polarization, shows a large inclination angle and can develop excellent rapid response. SOLUTION: This compound is an optically active ester represented by formula I (R is a 1-18 straight chain alkyl; R is a 2-18C straight chain alkyl; X is N or CH; Y is F or H; * is an asymmetric carbon), typically 2 (3-fluoro-4- hexyloxyphenyl)-5-(4-((S)-2-fluoro-2-methyldecanoyloxy)phenyl)pyrimidine. The compound of formula I is prepared by reaction of a phenol of formula II with an optically active carboxylic acid of formula III. The compound of formula I is admixed to a base liquid crystal in a range of 1-60 wt.% and the resultant liquid crystal composition can develop excellent effect as a material for the elements relating to optoelectronics.
