Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound exhibiting chiral smectic C phase in broad temperature range close to room temperature and capable of providing a liquid crystal composition capable of carrying out high speed response when mixed in a single body or a base liquid crystal. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [(x) is 1-3; (n) is 1-15; R is 2-18C straight chain alkyl; *C is an asymmetric carbon), e.g. 4'-[4 (6,6,6-trifluorohexyl)benzoyloxy]-4 biphenyl (S)-2-fluoro-2-methylheptanoate. The compound of formula I is obtained by esterifing, e.g. 4-benzyloxy-4'- hydroxybiphenyl with an optically active 2-fluoro-2-methylalkanoic acid of formula II, subjecting the resultant ester compound to debenzylation and then, esterifying the resultant debenzylated compound with a substituted benzoic acid of formula III. |
