Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool made of surface coated cemented carbide, exhibiting superior wear resistance over a long period and excellent in chipping resistance. SOLUTION: The cutting tool made of surface coated cemented carbide is produced by vapor-depositing, to 2 to 20 μm average layer thickness, a hard coating layer in a state of single or double layer, constituted of either or both of (Ti, Al, Pb)N represented by the compositional formula (Tia Alb Pbc )N and (Ti, Al, Pb)CN represented by the compositional formula (Tia Alb Pbc )Cd N1-d , on the surface of a base material made of cemented carbide composed of WC base cemented carbide or Ti CN-base cermet. In the above formulae, the symbols (a), (b), (c), and (d) stand for, by atomic ratio, 0.2-0.6, 0.1-0.79, 0.01-0.3, and 0.01-0.5, respectively, and a+b+c=1 is satisfied.
