Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject antagonist having specific antagonism to N- methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor and useful as a therapeutic agent for central nervous system diseases caused by excitatory amino acid by including a specific sugar analogue as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: This therapeutic agent for nervous system diseases comprises one or two or more kinds of sugar analogues (e.g. sodium D-gluconate), which are compounds comprising hexose or pentose derivatives, having hydroxymethyl group at C-6 position of hexose or C-5 position of pentose and having carboxyl group at C-1 position, in which configuration at C-4 position of hexose or C-4 position of pentose is R configuration preferably a compound of formula I [R1 and R2 are each H, a (substituted) lower alkyl or the like; R3 is a (substituted) OH or amino], formula H or formula III} or their lactone or their salts as active ingredients. The compounds are administered once or in several portions or continuously at a daily dose of about 1-1,000 mg in the case of oral administration or about 1-2,000 mg in the case of parenteral administration.
