Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve discharge luminous efficiency and to suppress virtual contour by expanding a margin, by dividing one field into plural sub-fields and blocks, and maintaining a biggest weight sub-field in each block and discharging it at a different time during one field. SOLUTION: For instance, one field is composed of XGA (1024×768) divided into seven sub-field and seven blocks. A reset period is set to 100 μsec, and a priming pulse or a deletion pulse is arbitrarily impressed in this period. An address pulse width is set to 3 μsec. A maintaining frequency is 125 kHz, and a largest brightness information bit, namely, a bit of a long discharge maintaining period is set to 256 cycles and about 2 msec, and a smallest brightness information bit is set to 4 cycles. Thus, since each block displays different brightness information, respectively, in a specific sub-field, it is possible to spatially distribute the brightness gravity center.
