Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mode scrambler capable of putting an optical fiber to be excited when the light emission spot of a light source is smaller than the light emission spot of the core of the optical fiber into a full-mode excitation state, by applying a side pressure in the part where a step index(SI) type optical fiber is overlappingly wound to intersect a mandrel and is superposed. SOLUTION: The SI type optical fiber 2 intersects the mandrel 3 and overlappingly wound on the mandrel 3 in such a manner that the side pressure is sufficiently exerted thereon. The light is made incident on such SI type optical fiber 2 from the light source 5 of the light emission spot smaller than the light emission spot of the core and small NA as well. The strain and bend by the extreme side pressure are then generated in the SI type optical fiber 2 at the intersection point where the fiber is lap wound, by which the mode distribution is disturbed in the SI type optical fiber 2 and is made uniform. The spot of the exit light from the SI type optical fiber 2 is expanded to the size of the core of the SI type optical fiber 2 and the NA of the exit light is the NA of the SI type optical fiber 2. Then, the optical fiber to be excited may be put into the full mode excitation state.
