Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a solid-state image pickup element capable of suppressing the reduction of a handling charge amount as much as possible at the time of transferring signal charges at a high speed in a vertical charge transfer part. SOLUTION: To the vertical charge transfer part composed by arranging the transfer electrodes 1- 4 of four systems in a vertical direction, at the time of selectively impressing the driving pulses of a high (H) level to the transfer electrodes 1- 4 of the four systems in respective periods t1-t8 within a vertical transfer cycle, the periods t2, t4, t6 and t8 when the system number of the transfer electrodes 1- 4 for impressing the driving pulses of the high level becomes minimum are set longer than the other periods t1, t3, t5 and t7.
