Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect whether or not any fault has occurred in a detection sensor, to maintain detection performance by acquiring the substitutive data of the detection sensor, in which a fault has occurred, and to secure safe passing by measuring the detection distance to a passing body and outputting the suitability discrimination data of the detection sensor based on the detection distance measured result. SOLUTION: A CPU acquires data on the distance from a position on the side face of a passage to a passerby T through upper detection sensors Sl and Sr. When the detection distance L1 measured by the upper left detection sensors Sl is founed, even in case where the detection distance L2 of the upper right detection sensor Sr is not clear, an inference detection distance L3 of the upper right detection sensor Sr is found from the relation of passage width and detection distance by calculation. When the found value is in the relation of L2<=L3, it is detected that the upper right detection sensor Sr is normally operating from the relation of detection distance. In the relation of L2>L3, on the other hand, the occurrence of any fault in the upper right detection sensor Sr is detected from the relation of detection distance.
