Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for key intermediates of antidepressants by subjecting a specific pyridine to condensation reaction with a specific benzyl cyanide derivative in the presence of a specific amount of specific catalyst and reacting the resultant compound with a lower alcohol in the presence of hydrogen chloride. SOLUTION: (A) 2,3,4,5-Tetrahydro-6-methoxypyridine of formula I (Me is methyl) is subjected to condensation reaction with (B) a benzyl cyanide derivative of formula II (R is H or the like) in the presence of (C) a catalyst of an organic base or a transition metal complex of the formula; MLn Xm [M is nickel or the like; L is an acetylacetonato ligand; X is a carbonyl ligand; (n) is 1-3; (m) is 0-2] in an amount of 1/2 to 1/500 mol based on 1 mol component A and the resultant compound of formula III (broken line is a geometrical isomer) is reacted with (E) an alcohol of the formula; R OH (R is a 1-4C lower alkyl) in the presence of (D) hydrogen chloride to provide the objective compound of formula IV.
