Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of inexpensively and efficiently producing an α-oxocarboxylic acid ester substantially at one stage, by using a 1,2-diol such as inexpensive ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or the like as a raw material. SOLUTION: A 1,2-diol is oxidized in a vapor phase in a first reactor to give a gaseous α-oxoaldehyde and/or α-hydroxyaldehyde. The gaseous α- oxoaldehyde and/or α-hydroxyaldehyde is mixed with an alcohol or an olefin made into a gaseous state by a vaporizing chamber 14, introduced into a second reactor 11 and oxidatively esterified with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst in the second reactor 11 to produce an α-oxocarboxylic acid ester.
