Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the generation of a gas of offensive odor which is generated secondarily in the decomposition of polluted substances and the discoloration of soil to mix a reducing agent and others uniformly in the purification of a large amount of a polluted substance. SOLUTION: In a method for purifying a substance polluted with halogenated organic compounds having a process in which a reducing agent in which standard electrode potential to a standard hydrogen electrode at 25 deg.C is -2400-30 mV and the nutrition source of conventional nutrition type anaerobic microorganisms are added to the polluted substance, the reducing agent is the alloy of reduced iron, cast iron, and an iron-silicon alloy and others or a water soluble compound. The nutrition source contains organic carbon and 20-50 wt.% based on the carbon of oxidized nitrogen. A process in which a nutrient solution and the reducing agent are mixed with the polluted substance, a process in which the pH of the polluted substance is adjusted at 4.5-9.0, and a process in which the mixture is allowed to stand under low ventilation conditions are included.
