Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an electrostatic ink-jet recording apparatus capable of recording to various recording media of different thicknesses, materials, etc. SOLUTION: An electrode at the side where ink is discharged (ink discharge electrode) 12 and an opposite electrode facing the ink discharge electrode via a recording medium 9 (grounding electrode) 5 constitute an ink fly electrode. Charged ink is electrostatically flowed to the recording medium 9 by an electric field formed at the impression of a voltage between the ink fly electrodes 12 and 5. A distance between the ink discharge electrode 12 and the recording medium 9 is detected by a displacement sensor 14 and a voltage to the discharge electrode 12 for flying the ink is controlled in accordance with the detection result. Whether the recording medium 9 is a printing paper or an OHP sheet is distinguished by an optical sensor 15, and the voltage to be impressed to the discharge electrode 12 is controlled in accordance with the distinction result.
