Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sodium-sulfur battery system suitable for utilization of a peak shift in an electric power system, an operation method, and an electric power system using it. SOLUTION: In a sodium-sulfur battery system composed of a battery module 1 storing a sodium-sulfur battery 3 in a heat-insulated container 2, a possible electric power peak shift quantity by the battery module 1 is calculated from a day load characteristic of electric power, a discharge characteristic of the battery module 1, an allowable battery heating value and an allowable discharge quantity, to control discharge of the battery module 1 based on the calculated result. By this manner, a peak shift in an electric power system is effectively conducted without impairing reliability of the sodium-sulfur battery 3, and efficiency of the sidium-sulfur battery system and a system for the electric power system using it are kept high.
