Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an amphoteric copolymer having excellent surface activity by converting the nitrogen atoms contained in a random copolymer comprising a (meth)acrylic acid dialkylaminoalkyl ester and/or a (meth)acrylic acid dialkylaminoalkylamide, a (meth)acrylic ester and a water-soluble unsaturated compound into cationized nitrogen atoms. SOLUTION: This copolymer is an amphoteric copolymer prepared by converting 5-100 mol.% nitrogen atoms contained in a copolymer prepared by randomly copolymerizing a mixture comprising a monomer (A) comprising an ester of formula I (wherein R is H or methyl; R is a lower alkylene; and R and R are each a lower alkyl) and/or an amide of formula II, an ester (B) of formula III (wherein R is a 1-24C aliphatic group or an aromatic group) and a water-soluble unsaturated compound (C) and having a monomer A/B weight ratio of 30/70-90/10 and a monomer C content of 0-10 wt.% into cationized nitrogen atoms of formula IV (wherein R is a 7-23C alkylene or an alkenylene; and M is a salt-forming cation).
