Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the presence of a document even in the case of the document being curled. SOLUTION: Light from a light emitting element 501 passes through a prism upper face 503a so as to be converged on the inside of a document conveying path above. When a curled document P is conveyed in this state, the light is reflected by the document P and passes through the prism upper face 503a so as to be transformed into almost parallel light. This light passes through a prism lower face 503c hardly being refracted, and received by a light receiving element 502.
