Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the constitution of a thin film magnetic head in which the corrosion of an MR element is prevented and the film thickness of a protective film is reduced. SOLUTION: It has been found that the frequency of the generation of corrosion of an MR element is rapidly reduced when the surface roughness becomes less than 2.0 nm. Thus, by using a fixed grinding particle disk, in which grinding particles having a particle diameter of less than 1/10 μm are buried in a grinding process of a magnetic head floating surface, the surface roughness of the floating surface is made less than 2.0 nm at Rmax in the magnetic film portion. Thus, the generation of corrosion of the MR element is prevented even though the thickness of the protective film, which is formed on the floating surface, is made less than 7 nm.
