Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the magnetic recording medium in which the running performance and the durability are improved without deteriorating the electromagnetic conversion characteristics. SOLUTION: Bearing ratio Tp is set into 3 to 60% measured at the slice level of a depth 45 nm from a maximum height Rp in the surface recessed and projected shape measured by the observation of the surface of a magnetic layer by means of an atomic force microscope. Moreover, a difference Δμ between maximum and minimum values of a friction coefficient μ of the magnetic layer is set to 0.1 to 0.0001 under the measuring conductions of a contact area of 5 mm , a mass of 2 g, a load of 0.04 to 0.2N, a speed of 3 mm/s and a measuring distance of 140 mm.
