Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for producing medicines and agrochemicals in a good yield by adding a specific dithiocarbamic acid salt solution to a chloroacetaldehyde solution in the presence of an acid to react the compounds with each other, while inhibiting the by- production of impurities. SOLUTION: This method for producing a 2-mercaptothiazole comprises adding (C) a dithiocarbamic acid salt of the formula (M is a cation) (for example, dithiocarbamic acid ammonium salt) to (B) a chloroacetaldehyde solution in a solvent such as water in the presence of (A) an acid such as hydrochloric acid preferably at about 20-35 deg.C, and further reacting the compounds with each other preferably at 50-80 deg.C for 2-10 hr. The components A and C are preferably used in amounts of 0.9-2.5 moles and 0.9-3.0 moles, respectively, per mole of the chloroacetaldehyde of component B.
