Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a microlens substrate having a fine pitch without decreasing the condensing efficiency of light so that the light entering the lens outgoes without a loss, by increasing the difference between the refractive index of the microlens and the refractive index of a transparent adhesive layer. SOLUTION: The microlens substrate 22 consists of a transparent substrate 33, a microlens 32, a transparent adhesive layer 31. a transparent thin plate 30, and a black matrix layer 29 and a transparent electrode layer 28 on the transparent thin plate 30. The microlens 32 is formed by dry etching. In this method, it is necessary that the material for the transparent adhesive layer 31 has enough adhesion strength to adhere the microlens 32 and the transparent thin plate 30, heat resistance, light transmitting property or the like, and that the refractive index of the material is smaller than the refractive index of a transparent high refractive index material as the material for the microlens 32. Or, a transparent resin layer can be used instead of the transparent thin plate 30 and the transparent adhesive 31.
