Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject novel compound that is readily deprotectable and useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, particularly as an antiplatelet drug and excellent in storage stability. SOLUTION: This novel compound is represented by the formula (R is t- butoxycarbonyl or benzyloxycarbonyl), typically [6-tert.-butoxycarboxamide]-3,4- dihydro-2H-1-benzopyran-3-yl]-acetic acid, [6-(benxyloxycarboxamide)-3,4-dhydro-2 H-1-benzopyran-3-yl]acetic acid and their optically active isomers. The racemic mixture of the compound is prepared, for example, by tert.-butoxycarbonylation of the amino group in methyl (6-amino-3,4-dihydro-2H-1-benzopyran-3-yl)acetate to form the methyl ester of the compound of the formula followed by ester hydrolysis of the product with base. Its optically active isomers are obtained by optically dividing the isomers through the chiral column chromatography followed by ester hydrolysis.
