Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject inhibitor having excellent type A monoamine oxidase-inhibiting action and exhibiting therapeutic or preventive effects on nervous diseases, especially depression. SOLUTION: This inhibitor contains an isoxazole derivative of formula I [R is a 5 to 6-membered aromatic heterocycle having one or two hetero atoms selected from nitrogen, oxygen or 6-14C aryl; R is hydrogen, a halogen or the like; R is amino, a mono-1-6C alkylamine or the like; X is oxygen or sulfur; (n) is 2-6] or its salt as an active ingredient. 3-(2-Aminoethoxy)5-phenylisoxazole or the like is preferable as the compound of formula I. The compound of formula I is obtained by halogenating a compound of formula II, reacting the product with a compound of the formula HX-(CH2 )n R a (R a is a protected amino, a protected mono-1-6C alkylamino or the like), and as necessary, deprotecting the reaction product.
