Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader of a compact device size capable of simultaneously reading image information present on both surfaces of a sheet- like original and reading the image information of a thick original such as book or the like. SOLUTION: The image information on one surface of the sheet-like original G2 carried through the carrying route H of an original pressure plate part DS is read by a moving scanning optical system 2 (first image read means) for moving in a sub scanning direction and reading the image of the original G mounted on original platen glass 1 (image read part) and the image information on the other surface is read by a contact type image sensor 37 (second image read means) provided in the carrying route H of the original pressure plate part DS.
