Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To construct a steel basement for a dwelling house or office in which well settlement method can be adapted with only a relatively light body weight, and a burying work can be safely and economically performed without requiring excessive heavy stones. SOLUTION: A number of steel segments (10a, 20a) are assembled into the form of the side wall of a basement within a basement constructing area, the soil on the inside of the side wall is excavated to settle it to a prescribed position in the ground by its dead weight, and a bottom plate 34 and a top plate 40 are then assembled thereto to construct the basement. The side wall is formed into two upper and lower stages, and the lower segment 10a is formed so that it is protruded more largely than the upper segment 20a with a height smaller than the upper segment 20a, and the surface contact with the ground in the lowest part of the lower segment 10a is minimized so that the grounding pressure in settlement is increased so as to be effective for the settlement. By setting such a protruding structure with the lower part of the side wall partially protruded outward, the grounding frictional area with the circumferential ground is minimized, the frictional resistance with the soil can be reduced, and well settlement method can be adapted with only a relatively light body weight.
