Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To substantially remove an outline artifact as much as possible by forming a minimum moving pixel distortion code set and using combination between a sub-field period generated by making the distortion code set correspond to prescribed one and respective illumination levels to respective pixels. SOLUTION: A luminance mapping processor 102 contains a table used for making pixel luminance correspond to an MPD code word. By using a minimum MPD distance code word, the number of continuous pulses are redistributed related to the given discharge period of the sub-field. A main processor 126 decides a cell address of a PDP answering to a received pixel address, and stores addresses and code words of respective pixels in a frame memory 106 as the display data. A display data controller 120 transfers the display data DAT to an address/data electrode driver 132 through signal transfer clock and latch signal generated by a clock and synchronism generator 108.
