Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer having an optically addressable side chain group capable of inducing a high birefringence by irradiation, and suitable for the formation of a constituent for optically storing an existing information and as a constituent capable of optically switching. SOLUTION: This polymer having optically addressable side chain group has a main chain working as a trunk and side chains branching therefrom, forming covalent bonds therewith and represented by formula I and II [S and S are each 0, S or NR (R is H or a 1-4C alkyl); T and T are each (CH2 )n ; Q and Q are each a single bond, O, COO, OCO, etc.; A is a unit capable of absorbing the irradiated electromagnetic wave; M is a mesogenic unit having anisotropic shape; (n) is 2-12] and A has >=0.2 absorptivity E obtained by six respective measurement of the formula A-Q H and AQ T S H such as a measurement about A-Q H or AQ T S H at an available lowest concentration in a solvent having an available lowest polarity and a measurement about a standard material at an available maximum concentration in the same solvent.
