Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce a cyclic phenol sulfide compound which is useful as an intermediate for functional materials, for example, a metal scavenger, sensor, separation membrane, polymer material, catalyst or artificial enzyme by reaction of a cyclic phenol sulfide with a halogenating agent. SOLUTION: The reaction of a cyclic phenol sulfide of formula I (R is H, a hydrocarbon; (m) is an integer of 1-7; (n) is an integer of 3-12), typically 25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxy-2,8,14,20-tetrathia [19.3.1.1 , .1 , .1 , ]octacosa-1(25),3,5,7(28),9,11,13,(27),15,17,19(26),21,23-dodecaene with a halogenating agent, for example, bromine or the like in a solvent such as chloroform affords the objective compound of formula II (X, Y, Z are each a halogen; one or more of X, Y and Z are H or a halogen which is useful as an intermediate of a metal scavenger, an ion sensor, a substrate-specific sensor, a separation membrane, a macromolecular material, an oxidation catalyst, a phase transfer catalyst or an artificial enzyme.
