Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for expanding tobacco, especially one impregnated with solid carbon dioxide. SOLUTION: This apparatus 10 comprises a curved, generally C-shaped duct 16, transports a tobacco raw material in a high-temperature gaseous medium, sublimes solid carbon dioxide and expands tobacco. The duct 16 is noncircular, has a high ratio of height to depth and a rectangular section increasing the depth from the inlet of the duct to a middle part and decreasing the depth from the middle part of the duct to an outlet. A wind-powered separation device 48 sends the tobacco raw material to a duct close to a throat in a Venturi section connected to the inlet of the transporting duct. A tangent separator 18 comprises its inlet equipped with an adjustable baffle 80 so as to control speed in the separator and is used for separating the expanded tobacco from the gaseous medium.
