Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject distyryl-biphenyl compound useful as a fluorescent brightening agent or its precursor by rearranging a hydrazobenzene compound, diazotizing the reaction product, and subsequently reacting the obtained diazonium compound with a styrene compound. SOLUTION: A hydrazobenzene compound is rearranged and subsequently diazotized, and the obtained compound of formula I (Z is H, a 1-4C alkyl, or the like; G1 is a counter ion) (e.g. benzidine bisdiazo) is arylated with two moles of a styrene compound of formula II (X is H, a halogen or the like), (e.g. 2-styrene sulfonic acid) in the presence of a palladium catalyst precursor (e.g. palladium chloride) and a base (sodium acetate) in an organic solvent (e.g. alcohol) at -10 to 100 deg.C, preferably 0-80 deg.C, to obtain the objective compound of formula III in a high yield from the safer starting materials. |
