Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a developer which has enough gradation, which prevents defects due to a ball-point pen or residues of a ball-point pen ink, and which does not cause contamination with small spots or failure due to a sludge, by incorporating at least an alkali agent and a specified compd. SOLUTION: The developer for a photosensitive lithographic printing plate contains at least an alkali agent and a compd. expressed by the formula of HOOC-L-COOH. In the formula, L is a substd. or unsubstd. alkyl group having unsatd. bonds. The compd. expressed by the formula is a kind of unsatd. polyvalent carboxylic acid such as fumaric acid, maleic acid, itaconic acid, 2- methyleneglutaric acid, alkenyl-substd. succinic acid, 1-alkyl-1-penten-4,5- dicarboxylic acid, fatty acid maleate, 3-butene-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid, etc. Fumaric acid or maleic acid are preferably used. In the automatic developing machine used, the developing time and the carrying speed are preferably controlled to <=10 sec and >=200 mm/min, respectively.
