Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely control the tension of a magnetic tape under a tape protective mode. SOLUTION: At the time of shifting from the tape stopping state to the protective mode in the magnetic recording and reproducing device, first of all, the torque of a reel motor 3 on the take-up side is controlled to lower the tension of the tape 6, and subsequently, the tape 6 wound around a drum 10 is loosened by a required amt. by a capstan 13 and a pinch roller 12. Alternatively, the tension is lowered during the time of slackening the tape 6. Thus, since the tape tension is lowered in advance to almost 0, it is not necessary to consider the tape tension at the time of feeding the tape, and hence the tape may accurately be fed by a required amt. for protecting the tape.
