Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing trifluoromethyloxirane having advantages exceeding those of a conventional method. SOLUTION: 3-Chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroacetone is reduced in the presence of an inert solvent and a proton donor is then added to the reactional mixture to thereby provide 3-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol. Hydrogen chloride is further eliminated therefrom at a lower temperature than 70 deg.C to cyclize the resultant 3-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol by actions of an alkaline aqueous solution.
