Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a starting raw material for the key intermediate of an antidepressant medicine. SOLUTION: A derivative of formula I (R is H, a 1-4C alkyl, etc.; R is a 1-4C alkyl; R is an amino-protecting group), e.g. 7-(N- benzyloxycarbonylamino)-3-oxo-2-phenylpentanoic acid methyl ester. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a 5-(N-substituted amino)pentaniic acid derivative with N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole and subsequently condensing the obtained imidazole compound with the enolate of a phenylacetic acid ester. The compound of formula I is hydrogenated in the presence of a VIII group transition metal complex or reduced, and the obtained 7-(N-substituted amino)-3- hydroxy-2-phenylheptanoic acid derivative of formula II (R is H, an amino- protecting group) is reacted with a benzene sulfonyl compound in the presence of a pyridine derivative to obtain a 7-(N-substituted amino)-3- benzenesulfonyloxy-2-phenylheptanoic acid derivative of formula III (R is benzenesulfonyl, etc.,).
