Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance utilization factor without increasing the content of a cobalt compound and retard drop in capacity caused by overdischarge, by containing nickel hydroxide and particles whose main component is cobalt hydroxide having the specified tap density in a positive electrode. SOLUTION: A positive electrode is manufactured in such a way that particles whose main component is nickel hydroxide, particles whose main component is cobalt hydroxide having a tap density of 0.4-1.15 g/ml, and a thicker are dispersed in a solvent such as water to form slurry, the slurry obtained is filled in a conductive substrate, dried, then the substrate is press-molded. In order to enhance the charge/discharge efficiency of an alkaline storage battery, use of the nickel hydroxide having a peak half-band width of (101) planes as determined by X-ray powder diffraction of 0.8 deg./2θ(Cu/Kα) or more is preferable. Drop in capacity after standing for a long time is retarded.
