Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine-operated discharge lamp lighting apparatus of which the constituent elements are prevented from being damaged due to overheating at the time of lighting failure of a high pressure discharge lamp. SOLUTION: A pulse generating circuit 13 to generate high voltage pulses Vp while using a power generator 11 as a power source driven by an internal combustion engine 10 is installed to apply the high voltage pluses Vp to a discharge lamp 12 while the pluses being overlaid on the output voltage of the power generator 11. As the power generator 11, a generator having drooping characteristic is employed. A pulse generation controlling means 14 detects the temperature of an element which generates heat following the high voltage pulse generation among the constituent elements of the pulse generating circuit 13 and controls the pulse generating circuit 13 in a manner that the circuit 13 is allowed to generate the high voltage pulses in the case the detected temperature is a set temperature or lower and the circuit 13 is stopped generating the high voltage pulses in the case the detected temperature exceeds the set temperature.
