Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate a character processing only for the handwriting judged necessary in a handwritten character recognizing device for recognizing handwritten inputted handwriting, and searching a corresponding character code. SOLUTION: An inputting means 1 stores ink data being handwriting information indicating handwriting handwritten inputted by each character in an index data storing part 2. A character column with this handwriting is reduced and displayed on a displaying means 6. When the desired range of the displayed character column is designated by a range designating means 7, a recognition processing means 4 collates this designated part with a recognition dictionary in a recognition diction storage part 3 by each character, and searches a corresponding character code as a recognized result. A characrer corresponding to the searched character code is replaced for the character with handwriting, and reduced and displayed on the displaying means 6. Therefore, the recognition processing can be operated only to the handwriting judged necessary.
