Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a ferroelectric liq. crystal compsn. having a large temp. dependence of spontaneous polarization and a liq. crystal element prepd. from the same, having a small temp. dependence of response speed, and providing a wide temp. margin in its practical use by compounding a specific ferroelectric compd. and two specific compds. SOLUTION: This compsn. is prepd. by compounding 0.5-60wt.%, pref. 0.5-30wt.% compd. represented by formula I (wherein R1 is 4-16C alkyl; and R2 is 2-12C alkyl) with at least one compd. represented by formula II (wherein R3 and R4 are each 1-15C alkyl or alkoxy; and A is a group represented by formula III) and at least one compd. represented by formula IV (wherein R5 and R6 are each 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy; and X is H or one or two fluorine atoms) in a wt. ratio of the compd. represented by formula II to the compd. represented by formula IV of (40/60)-(90/10). Since the compsn. contains the compd. represented by formula I in a low concn. and has a relatively low spontaneous polarization. a good ferroelectric liq. crystal element hardly causing image persistence can be obtd.
