Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic raw material for chemicals such as agrochemical, etc., by a method excellent in reaction yield, etc., by using an aprotic polar organic solvent as a reaction solvent in Kolbe-Schmitt's reaction. SOLUTION: An aprotic polar organic solvent such as 1,3-dimethyl-2- imidazolidinone is used as a reaction solvent. A phenol is reacted with an alkali metal compound in the ratio of the phenol to the total of the alkali metal compound and the aprotic polar organic solvent of >1 by molar ratio, preferably 2-10 mols based on the alkali metal compound and 2-30 mols based on the aprotic polar organic solvent to give the alkali metal salt of the phenol. Then the alkali metal salt is reacted with carbon dioxide to give the objective compound.
