Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and economically obtain a metallocene catalyst system by reacting a metallocene starting compound in a solvent with a compound capable of transferring a hydrocarbon group and converting formed metallocene compound σ-substituted with at least one hydrocarbon group with an activator in the solution without isolation. SOLUTION: The metallocene starting compound used is a cyclopentadienyl complex, for example, a bridged or unbridged biscyclopentadienyl complex or a monocyclopentadienyl complex. It is desirably a non-crosslinked or crosslinked metallocene compound of the formula [wherein M is a transition metal; R is H or SiR 3 (wherein R is H or a 1-40C group) or a 1-30C group; R is H or SiR 3 (wherein R is H, a 1-40C group or a 1-30C group); l is 5 when v is 0 or is 4 when v is 1; m is 5 when v is 0 or is 4 when v is 1; L is H, a halogen or the like; and Z is a bridging element]. This compound is reacted with a compound capable of transferring a hydrocarbon group in an organic solution.
