Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound that is useful as a synthetic intermediate for sulfonylurea herbicide by simplified one-step reaction. SOLUTION: Pyridinium-1-(pyrazolylsulfonylamino)carboxylate of formula I (R is H, a 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; R is H, a 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; R is H, methyl, ethyl or phenyl) is obtained by reaction of a sulfonyl chloride derivative of formula II with alkali metal cyanate, preferably sodium cyanate and pyridine in a solvent. The compound of formula I is allowed to react with 2-amino-4,6- dimethoxypyrimidine to give a sulfonylurea derivative of formula III, which is useful as a herbicide. According to this process, this sulfonylurea derivative of high purity can be obtained through a one-step reaction in high yield.
