Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the leakage light occurring in the imperfectness of the polarizer characteristic of a polarizing plate and to improve a display grade by using a reflection plate which is provided with a polarization characteristic by forming fine grooves on a reflection plate and does not reflect circularly polarized light or elliptically polarized light. SOLUTION: Glass substrates 1, 2 are joined to each other via a prescribed spacing by a sealing material 3. Liquid crystals 4 are held in the spacing. Transparent electrodes 5 and an oriented film 6 are formed on the inside surface of the upper glass substrate 1. Transparent electrodes 7 and an oriented film 8 are also formed on the inside surface of the lower glass substrate 2. The polarizing plate 9 is placed on the upper side of such liquid crystal cell. A phase difference plate 11 is interposed between the upper glass substrate 1 and the polarizing plate 9 in some cases. The reflection plate 10 is placed on the lower side of the liquid crystal cell. The surface of the reflection plate 10 is subjected to hairline working so that the fine grooves are formed only in the specific direction.
