Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need of a mechanical document sensor, to simplify structure and to reduce cost by starting a scanning operation when an electric signal generated by permitting a Gray level pattern formed on the outer face of a roller to enter the view of an image sensor differs from a standard value. SOLUTION: A roller 75 has the Gray level pattern which covers the outer face and is provided with plural black and white sections that are alternately arranged. A controller 73 operates the image sensor 71, executes the sensing operation of the Gray level pattern, stores an obtained Gray level value as the standard value, calculates the obtained Gray level value as the standard value, calculates first and second threshold values from the standard value and stores them in a memory 79. When a system becomes a scanning mode, the sensing operation on an image in the view of the image sensor 71 is executed. When a difference 77 between the obtained value and the standard value is larger than the first threshold, the scanning operation is executed and the scanning operation is terminated when it is smaller than the second threshold.
