Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a production containing a metal bis(enolate) and a promoter, suitable for producing a functionalized polymer. SOLUTION: This catalyst contains (A) a metal bis(enolate) of formula I (L is a ligand; (m) is 1-6; M is an element of the group IIIa of the periodic table; R to R are each H, etc.; X and X are each H, etc.) containing two enolate groups each strictly bonded to a metal by one single bond and (B) a compound [e.g. tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane] as a promoter. The component A is preferably a metal bis(enolate) of formula II (M is an element of the group IIIa of the periodic table; R is H, etc.; R is H, etc.; (v) is 0 or 1; (a) is 5 when (v) is 0 and (a) is 4 when (v) is 1; (b) is 5 when (v) is 0 and (b) is 4 when (v) is 1; Z is a cross-linking element between two cyclopentadienyl rings) [e.g. bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium bispropane-2-olate]. The component A is obtained by reacting a metal halide with an alkali metal enolate (lithium enolate).
